Minerals Council hosts Missing Persons Locator Systems Day of Learning
Industry organisation the Minerals Council South Africa on May 8 hosted the Missing Persons Locator Systems Day of Learning Workshop, aimed at enhancing safety, improving emergency response capabilities and saving lives.
The workshop brought together representatives from organised labour, mining companies, regulators, technology providers and safety experts to share leading practices, innovative technologies and lessons learned in locating persons who go missing during mining incidents.
The council points out that incidents involving missing or unaccounted-for workers during emergencies remain a critical concern.
It highlights rapid and accurate location of personnel as essential to improving rescue outcomes and reinforcing the industry’s commitment to achieving zero harm.
The Day of Learning focused on practical interventions and technologies to reduce response times and improve coordination during emergencies.
Technologies include advancements in real-time tracking systems, communication technologies and integrated control room solutions designed to ensure every employee can be located quickly.
“This platform is about collaboration, transparency and learning. We are bringing together all stakeholders to openly share experiences and solutions that will strengthen our collective ability to respond effectively when it matters most,” says Minerals Council safety and sustainable development head Dushendra Naidoo.
The workshop underscored the importance of leadership, worker participation and the adoption of proven technologies to minimise risk and improve outcomes during crisis situations.
Participants engaged in discussions, case studies and demonstrations of locator systems currently being implemented or piloted across operations.
The outcomes of the workshop are expected to contribute to a more coordinated, technology-driven approach to mine safety.
